If it's your first-time visiting Israel, you may ask yourself: how can I move around from place to place on my trip? Let me help you figure out the best option for you:
1. Public transportation- Let's start with the cheapest option, which is wonderful, as it saves the environment and money simultaneously. It is quite manageable in Israel, and yet, here are a few considerations to keep in mind: on Friday at noon until Saturday evening, there is no public transportation in most of the cities and between. Say what? Yes, since Israel by a definition is a Jewish state, and Saturday is the sacred day for Jews, public transportation does not run on this day. Second, the frequency of trains and buses are dynamic, or not existent in some areas, such as in the periphery. Third, taxis are extremely expensive!
2. Renting a car- most Israelis use a private vehicle to get around in Israel, since there are no buses or trains on weekends, and when there are we have, they may not always be reliable. If you decide to rent a car in Israel, driving should be easy as all signs are all in English, some left over from the British Mandate, but the driving mentality? Not British! :) This is part of the experience.
3. Hire your own driver- might be the most comfortable option, but not the cheapest one. It can be a private taxi driver, or a driver who is also a guide. For both options, I can help you to find the right person.
4. Hitchhiking- Very common in a lot of countries, I know, but in Israel? A bit less. Depends mostly on the area. In the periphery, due to infrequent public transportation, it is more common to hitchhike. If you want to give it a try, you can join some hitch-hiking Facebook groups, or ask for a ride on the Waze or Moovit Apps.
